How to read this map

Each circle is one hail report filed with the National Weather Service. The bigger and darker the circle, the larger the hail. Hover or tap a circle for the date, the reported stone size and who reported it.

• Under 1 inch — rarely damages asphalt shingles on its own, though it can bruise older or softer roofs.
• 1 inch (quarter) — the size at which shingle damage typically starts.
• 1.5 inch (ping-pong ball) — commonly bruises or fractures shingles; granule loss is likely.
• 2 inch and up (egg or larger) — expect visible damage, and often damage to vents, flashing and gutters too.

Hail bruising frequently cannot be seen from the ground. A bruised shingle looks intact but has lost the granules protecting it, and it fails years earlier than it should. That is why adjusters want photographs taken on the roof rather than from the driveway.

What to do if hail hit your address

1. Write down the date. Your claim is tied to a date of loss, and this map gives you it.
2. Photograph what you can safely see — dented gutters, downspouts, window screens, the AC condenser fins. Ground-level hail evidence supports a roof claim.
3. Get the roof inspected before you call. A written assessment with photographs is far more use to an adjuster than a phone call describing a storm.
4. Then contact your insurer. Deadlines vary by policy, so do not sit on it.
